Eye lasers with the LASIK method

It starts sooner or later for almost everyone: visual acuity fades and you go to the optician to have glasses and/or contact lenses made. However, this can be very inappropriate for special hobbies and life situations (e.g. diving, make-up etc). In addition, some people, especially increasingly with age, have ever greater problems with vision, which is why laser eye surgery is almost an option. Our Aesthetic Travel team in Antalya would like to give you back your vision so that you can regain a high quality of life and feel comfortable in your own body. Let us provide you with comprehensive information!

LASIK technology: Your laser eye treatment in Turkey

In addition to the classical PRK method, further laser eye techniques are differentiated. On the one hand the LASIK-OP, which is a mixture of the LASIK method and the PRK method, and on the other hand there are ReLEx smile, Femto-LASIK and Epi-LASIK.

Laser in situ keratomileusis, or LASIK for short, is an eye laser procedure that can be used to correct your ametropia using a laser and restore your vision and visual acuity. In general, we at Aestehtic Travel recommend that you have your eyes lasered using the LASIK method in Turkey if you suffer from severe visual impairment. Over 90% of all laser eye corrections are corrected using the LASIK procedure.

This is especially due to the fact that short-sightedness down to -10 dioptres, long-sightedness up to +4 dioptres as well as corneal curvatures up to about 5 dioptres can be corrected. However, the degree of success varies from person to person, as the degree of success also correlates with the parameters corneal thickness and pupil diameter. Therefore, it is sometimes advisable to use a different laser extraction method. Our specialist surgeons in Turkey will explain which one is best for you.

Procedure of the LASIK method

Depending on the number of dioptres, the treatment time varies from only a few minutes to about 20 minutes per eye. However, you should plan 1-2 days for the preliminary examination, as all important parameters for your eye surgery in Turkey are documented here. The actual procedure of the LASIK treatment begins with a local anaesthetic of the eye (via special eye drops), which are cleaned in parallel. A general anaesthetic is not necessary, as the procedure is usually completely painless and does not take long. Both a lid speculum and a suction ring are used to keep the eye open and fixate it during the operation.

A microkeratome (fine cutting tool) is then used to create a so-called flap. This “corneal flap” can be folded to the side in a further step so that the laser can now be used. The laser works by itself using the most modern technologies, so that individual corneal layers that are necessary for correction are planed off exactly there. In a final step, the flap is still closed, as it protects the lid from external influences.

What do I do after an eye laser surgery with the LASIK technique?

One day after the LASIK eye laser treatment, a follow-up examination is carried out in our clinic. Theoretically, the patient can go straight back to work, but we recommend you and your eyes a few more days of rest. In addition, you should refrain from activities such as make-up, sauna or sports within the first two weeks after the eye surgery. You will receive further information during your preliminary examination or, if you wish, in advance by e-mail or telephone.

For whom is the LASIK method useful?

With the LASIK eye laser method, stable ametropia (farsightedness up to +5 dioptres (dpt), nearsightedness up to -12 dioptres, corneal curvature up to 4 dioptres) can be corrected.

How does LASIK treatment work?

LASIK eye laser surgery is always performed on an outpatient basis. You will receive anesthetic eye drops before your LASIK so that you will not feel any pain. To keep the eye open, you will receive an eye clip (speculum) that fixes your eyelids during the operation.

If the anesthetic effect occurs, a flap (small lid) is loosened on your corneal surface by laser. The flap is then opened to expose the corneal layer of the eye.

The laser then forms and models the tissue in the micrometer range. The cornea thus receives an exact curvature and the ametropia can be compensated. The flap is moved back to its previous position in a similar way to the body’s own patch. The negative pressure of the eyes ensures that the flap is automatically sucked and fixed. LASIK surgery is now complete. After a detailed information meeting you can leave the clinic/practice.

What reaction do the eyes show after LASIK surgery?

LASIK eye surgery can increase tear secretion and redness of the eyes. These reactions are normal and disappear quickly. A little later, reactions to the contrary may occur: The eye appears dry and the feeling of an imaginary foreign body appears. For relief you will get a tear substitute. Some patients also complain of glare such as halos in luminaires. On the other hand, severe pain must not occur under any circumstances. Follow-up checks are carried out the following day, after seven days, after thirty days and after three months.

Do I still need glasses after the correction?

Patients usually get along well in everyday life after LASIK surgery without contact lenses or glasses. Lenses or glasses may still be necessary when driving at night or during strenuous eye work. Even presbyopia, which starts at 45 years of age, often has to be compensated by reading glasses.

How much rest time is required?

Usually it is sufficient to schedule two days of rest after LASIK surgery. However, you should not work in a dusty environment for the first seven days. You can drive again when your complete visual performance is reached. This is determined during the initial follow-up examinations.

When will fitness studios, jogging and cycling be possible again?

Light sports can be resumed two or three days after LASIK surgery. If there is a lot of wind and/or dust, protective goggles are strongly recommended.

Does the health insurance company pay for LASIK surgery?

Some private health insurance companies cover some or all of the costs. For this you should inform directly and thoroughly about the conditions with your insurance before. Statutory health insurance funds generally do not currently provide laser eye treatments.

When are corrections necessary?

Even if the LASIK method is one of the safest methods for correcting refractive errors by laser, under/overcorrections can occur in about ten to twenty percent. Furthermore, rare decentration may occur in the treated area or ingrown epithelial cells between the corneal margin and the flap. A subsequent correction, which takes place approximately three to six months after the eye operation, can remedy the situation.
