PRK – the classic laser eye method: Studies prove effectiveness

Different types of laser eye techniques are differentiated – photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and newer methods such as ReLEx Smile or LASIK. In the PRK eye laser method, the epithelial layer of the cornea is removed with the aid of a laser. This not only corrects corneal curvatures (astigmatism) up to 5 dioptres, but also counteracts myopia down to -6 dioptres and hyperopia up to +4 dioptres. These values vary from country to country, and the final result is also strongly related to the corneal thickness of the patient.

By removing the tissue, the light rays incident on the cornea are refracted in such a way that they are focused in a focal point on the retina that the ametropia is permanently corrected. Since the PRK eye laser method has existed since the 1980s, there are now numerous studies that confirm the efficiency and long-term success of this technique.

Procedure of the PRK eye laser method

At the beginning of a laser surgery with PRK technique, the eye is extensively examined by our team of doctors in Antalya. These include determining the thickness and topography of the cornea in order to identify possible curvatures and deformations, measuring the pupil and intraocular pressure and validating the correction value of the refraction of light in the eye.

Once this has been done, the covering skin in the eye is removed with a special surgical knife and the cornea is exposed. The surface of the cornea is then removed using an excimer laser until the previously calculated value is reached. In a final step, a contact lens is inserted into the eye, where it serves as protection until the epithelium has grown again. This usually takes a few days and can occasionally cause pain, as after every operation.

In general, laser eye surgery is carried out on an outpatient basis at and in Turkey, allowing the patient to leave our clinic in Antalya on the same day. Shortly after the procedure you will be able to see the first results with your own eyes and the final result will be permanent within a few days.

PRK Method Turkey - FAQ

If your cornea is not thick enough to perform a classic LASIK treatment, the PRK (surface treatment) method can still help you. However, as with other laser techniques, the result is correction of your ametropia so that you can live without contact lenses and glasses.

Whether you are suitable for a PRK eye laser treatment depends primarily on your visual defect and its strength. As a rule, the following visual defects can be treated using the PRK technique:

  • Nearsightedness up to about -8 diopters
  • Farsightedness up to a maximum of +3 diopters
  • Corneal curvature up to about 6 diopters.

The PRK procedure (photorefractive keratectomy) is not performed at a depth of 0.1 millimetres, but directly below the upper corneal layer. No flap needs to be prepared. The epithelium is softened by a specially developed alcohol solution and then gently moved to the side.

Once the treatment area is exposed, the surgeon can use the excimer laser to correct the refractive power in the eye by removing the most accurately calculated corneal part. The thickness of the detached cell layer is about forty to fifty micrometers. Subsequently, the treated eye area is protected by a medical contact lens until the epithelium is closed again. This special surface laser treatment requires a longer rehabilitation time than, for example, LASIK.

No. It is better to take a taxi or have your family/friends pick you up.

This depends entirely on your personal professional field. You can start working on your PC again the next day. Normally, however, you are fully operational again after one to four days.

You may have to take leave for the day of treatment and the following day, as your doctor unfortunately cannot issue you with a certificate of incapacity for work. Some eye centres/clinics also offer treatment days such as thursday, friday or even on weekends.

Normally, the costs of laser treatment with PRK technique are slightly lower for myopia and farsightedness than for LASIK treatments. In addition, treatment costs can fluctuate considerably if, among other things, the scope of services differs. In Germany, the cheapest PRK treatments are performed for approximately 800 euros per eye. Statutory health insurance usually does not cover any of these costs. Private health insurance companies may pay part or all of the treatment costs. You should definitely ask your insurance in advance. Some institutes/clinics also grant partial payment.

After a laser treatment with PRK method your eyes can hurt a little during the first days. In addition, a strong feeling of dryness and itching can occur. On the other hand, under/overcorrections of your vision are rare. In a few cases, the faulty healing of the epithelium, either by folding or waxing, can lead to significant visual discomfort. Your specialist can advise you on this.
