Gastric Bypass – efficient and lasting weight loss for sure

The gastric bypass is a bypass technique that is the most commonly used surgical procedure in Turkey and other countries. However, it is also the most complex gastric surgery. For gastric bypass, a specialist surgeon reduces the size of the stomach so that it only holds about 15-20 ml. The remaining stomach is then sutured with a deeper small intestine loop so that the duodenum is excluded from digestion. This is also known as a bypass. Due to the exclusion of the duodenum, food and digestive juices, i.e. the secretions responsible for enzymatic cleavage, are only mixed in the middle small intestine. This is the primary reason why calorie intake is lower. What is a gastric bypass?

In a gastric bypass operation, a part of the stomach is separated first, leaving only a small “remaining stomach”. The small intestine is also severed. One end is connected to the remaining stomach, the other is diverted so that the food is first mixed in the middle small intestine. Thus, not all food components can be broken down and the undigested food is pushed into the large intestine. Because of this diversion, the gastrointestinal tract can absorb less and a faster feeling of satiety is achieved. In addition, you can eat much less.

How is the operation carried out?

The gastric bypass operation usually takes between 90 and 150 minutes and is performed under general anesthesia. With pre- and aftercare you will stay in hospital for about one week and will not be able to work for 2-3 weeks. The operation is performed as a keyhole operation (laparoscopic surgery), which means that several skin incisions of about two centimetres in size are made through which the camera and instruments are inserted. First, a part of the stomach is cut off with a stapler. Then the small intestine is cut to sew the lower end to the remaining stomach. The upper end is sewn to the third section of the small intestine, giving the shape of a Y.

For whom is the gastric bypass operation suitable?

If you also suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea, gastric bypass surgery makes sense from a BMI of 35. However, you can only undergo this procedure if all non-operative measures, such as exercise training or nutritional advice, have not been sufficiently successful for six to twelve months. This procedure is particularly recommended for people who suffer from severe obesity due to excessive consumption of high-calorie foods, such as sweets or particularly fatty foods.

How does weight loss work?

It has been proven that the gastric bypass operation achieves very good long-term results. On average, you can lose 65 to 70 percent of your excess weight and additionally prevent secondary diseases of obesity.

Are there risks or side effects?

By changing the entire physiology of digestion, the intake of vitamins can also be prevented, so that the intake of a multivitamin preparation may be necessary. In addition, flatulence or diarrhoea can occur and, in rare cases, circulatory waste after ingestion of foods or beverages with a high sugar content. The effect of the reduced stomach can diminish over time, which means that larger amounts of food can be taken up again permanently.

Which accompanying measures must I observe?

During the first six months after the operation it is recommended not to drink alcohol, as this can lead to an unpleasant feeling of pressure. In addition, a large blood count should be taken after six months and the vitamin balance should be examined to avoid long-term deficiencies. The diet should be changed and the body observed. Too much fat can cause heavy sweating or general discomfort and should therefore be avoided if possible. In principle, it is advisable to consult a nutritionist to ensure from the outset that the diet is adapted.

Are there any extra costs?

With Aesthetic Travel you do not have to expect any further costs. In general, these are inclusive prices.
